Facing the subject of friction, concerning wide field of knowledge, he has conducted both theoretical and practical research in lubrication, wearing, appearance, flow change, heat transfer, vibration, material, technology, detection, control, reliability, knowledge acquisition, data bank, expert system, etc. and achieved progress.
During the 45 years he has taught the following courses: mechanism principles, machine parts, vibration theory, theory on fluid dynamic lubrication, theory on plastic fluid lubrication, bearings technology, friction, modern design, etc.
Education and work background
In 1955, graduated in Jiaotong University (Shanghai), majoring in inner- combustion engine building, and worked as a teacher of the university. Then moved to the west with the university. Since then he has worked in the Univ. as the director of XJTU Lubrication Theory and Bearings Institute (1986-1997), director of the open Lab of Lubrication Theory and Bearings System under the state Education Commission (1994-1999). Now he is a professor (1986- ), Ph.D. Supervisor(1994- ), director of the academic committee of state key lab of friction of Qinghua Univ., member of assessment group of academic degree conferring under the State Council, member of consulting committee for teaching reform facing the 21 century under State Education Commission, senior expert of AMTRC modern designing technology under the mechanics science academy, part time professor of over 10 univ., director of journal Chinese mechanical engineering, vice-director of journal friction, and editor of journal ¡®mechanics engineering¡±, ¡°engineering design¡±, British Proc lMechE (part J0 Journal of Engineering Tribology. Vice-director of the first, second and third Chinese Mechanical Engineering Association of Friction (1979-1992), director of its fourth Association (1992-1997), member of its fifth standing committee (1997- ). Academician first appointed by the China Engineering Academy (May 1994).
Academic and Research results
Through over 40 years of joint efforts with many colleagues a research group has been developed into a research office, and finally a world well-known institute in fluid lubrication theory, bearings technology and rotor-bearing system dynamics. The lab developed at the same time has become the largest one in the field regarded by the international counterparts, playing the leading role and having the testers unavailable in the world.
Under the process, over dozens of state important research projects have been fulfilled under his leadership. As the first leader of the project he got the prize of the science congress (1978), provincial scientific and technical result prize (first grade, 1979), provincial individual scientific result prize(1979), univ. science-technical result award( first,1981), state natural science award(fourth, 1982)science-technical result award of Ministry of Mechanics ( second,1982), science-technical progress award of the mechanics and electricity ministry (third, 1991), science-technical progress award of the state education commission 9first, 1991, 1995 1997, second, 1987), state science-technical progress award(second, 1997), first Ruzineu Golden Ball award honorary award(1995), science-technical achievement reward of Chinese mechanic engineering association(1996), science and technology progress awardd of He Liang and He Li fund (1999), etc. many patents, over 200 papers, cultivated 39 MA graduates and 31 Ph.D. He was given the title of state labor model in the education field( 1995).
He developed the system method originally based on the simple friction system, proposed the basic idea of friction macro system system-engineering and constructed the theoretical frame. He obtained important and rich theoretical and practical results in friction and dynamics design in the large turbine generators and high-speed turbine mechanical rotor bearing system and internal combustion engine cylinder & piston parts system. He has done lots of work in promoting friction design and setting up friction data bank. He has published a lot of papers and books, deducing 3 basic laws of friction activities: system dependence, time dependence and the coupling of different discipline behavior and presented 3 axioms of friction. He pointed out that the traditional theory and technology usually didn¡¯t take into account the dynamic behavior coupling, which was an impression left by history on the science of fiction¡ªlow speed and low precision.
He proposed many important points of view, such as product design is the soul of manufacture, creation is the soul of modern design, modern design is one demanding driving, and based on knowledge, knowledge of product design is a dynamic integration and new product is materialization of new knowledge. He studied the factors constituting product competitive force and pointed out: from the long run, basically the property i.e. the function and the quality is the primary factor of the competitive force. He studied the information source and method to get new knowledge of design in the designing products and pointed out: the core of designing is to get new knowledge, while the present difficulty facing manufacture is the lack of the ability to get new knowledge of designing. The ability to get knowledge of designing is a comprehensive force, including both operation management and technical level; including both capital force and personnel force; including both advanced equipment and past experience. The total of them may be regarded as a kind of resource. According to this, he suggested, organized and presided modern design and product research & development network¡ªa designing organization of virtual cooperation of different places, which has worked over 5 years, Now there are about 20 units able to provide resource to get designing knowledge entering the network There are about 80 intelligence resources supporting design available to be used. This provided the manufacturers with a new way of thinking for overcoming the difficulty in getting the knowledge during the creative designing.
