Job Resume

In 1955, he graduated from Tsinghua University and got gold medal of excellent student. From 1978 to 1981, he studied in University of Wisconsin at Madison and Massachusetts Institute of Technology in United States for two years. In 1985, he visited United States again as a visiting scholar to investigate the higher engineering education and the development of material science and engineering. He is now professor of Department of Mechanical Engineering of Tsinghua University, and academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering. In 2002, he was appointed as part-time professor of Xi'an Jiaotong University.
He is also the director of Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society, the consultant of the China Foundry Association, the honorary director of China Foundrymen's Society, the director of Beijing Mechanical Engineering Society, the vice president of Beijing Foundrymen's Society, the editors of Journal of Chinese Mechanical Engineering, Journal of Iron and Steel, International Journal of Cast Metals Research and a number of other journals.

Academy and Scientific Findings

He has made great contribution to the development of Chinese advanced manufacturing technology, the upgrading of the traditional casting industry by using computer technology, the basic research of solidification process and the applied research of ductile iron and light metals casting technology. He won 15 important awards, including two first class awards of scientific and technological progress of the Ministry of Education, one first class prize of excellent teaching achievement in higher engineering education from Beijing municipal government, five second class awards of scientific and technological progress from Ministry of Machine Building or Ministry of Education, and two awards from the United States. Besides, he got 2 national invention patents. In 2002, he won Guanghua engineering science and technology prize.
He visited and gave lectures in over 20 universities in United States, United Kingdom, etc., and presented over 30 papers at international conferences. He published 3 books and over 300 papers.
He is engaged in higher engineering education in the field of materials processing engineering as well as foundry engineering and he has trained 30 doctors. In 1993, he got first class prize of excellent teaching achievement in higher engineering education from Beijing municipal government.
He has made great contribution to upgrade the traditional casting industry by using computer technology and develop new research area of multi-scale modeling and simulation of macro and micro solidification process. His research results have been popularized and applied in over 40 factories for the purpose of optimizing casting technology, ensuring casting quality, shortening lead time, reducing production cost and acquiring obvious economic and social benefit for the factories.
He has been engaged in the research of solidification process of iron casting and the control of graphite morphology, in the improvement of casting iron performance and the development of new type of casting iron. He was one of the pioneers to study casting iron crystallization process under traditional and special conditions by using advanced analytical instruments such as scanning electron microscope, electron micro-probe, transmission electron microscope and auger electron microscope. He developed mold inoculation and bismuth containing inoculation technologies to produce as-cast ductile iron castings and got two patents. These technologies were extensively popularized and applied in Nanjing Automobile Works, the First Automobile Works and the Second Automobile Works.
In recent years, he is involved in strategy study of the future trends of manufacturing technology and materials processing technology as well. He and his group make great contribution to the research and development of new generation net shape casting, including lost foam casting, die casting and investment casting.
