Financed by the World Bank loan, the State
Key Lab for Manufacturing Systems Engineering (SKLMSE)
was formally founded in 1995. Integrating modern information
science and technology and utilizing new methodologies
in systems engineering, mechanical engineering and management
engineering, its mission is to develop new concepts,
methodologies and technologies for manufacturing industries.
Particularly, the Lab makes great efforts to make use
of its advanced facility and equipment to carry out
frontier research on advanced manufacturing systems,
to educate high-level researchers and to train industrial
practitioners in China.

Organization and Personnel
Director: Prof. Xiaohong Guan
Associate Director: Prof. Yuchen Ding, Zongbin Li
Chair of Research Affair Committee: Prof. Youlun Xiong
Vice Chair of Research Affair Committee:Prof. Zhihang
Lin
The lab consists of 6 divisions: Division for Rapid
Prototyping and Manufacturing, Division for System Optimization
and Scheduling, Division for System Monitoring and Diagnosis,
Division for Manufacturing Information Systems and CIMS,
Division for Precision Engineering and Photoelectronic
Technology, and Division for Management and Decision
in Manufacturing System. There are 40 resident faculty
members, engineers and administrators. Among the resident
members there are one holding Cheung Kong Professorship,
two awarded National Outstanding Young Investigator
Grant, and many bestowed various awards for outstanding
young faculty members.

Based on its mission and research focuses, the lab has
undertaken 254 research projects, including 34 projects
of National 863 Program, 3 projects of National 973
program, 43 research projects of NSFC, 7 of the National
Key Tech Initiatives, 15 of Ministerial & provincial
projects, and 16 international cooperation projects
since it was founded.
The researchers in the Lab are awarded 5 National Prizes
for Progress in Science and Technology or Invention
(3 Second Grade and 2 Third Grade), 30 Provincial or
Ministerial Prizes for Progress in Science and Technology
or Invention (6 First Grade, 9 Second Grade and 15 Third
Grade), one awarded May Day Outstanding Worker Medal
and Chiang¡¯s Prize for Excellence in Science and Technology,
one awarded with the title of the Great Achievement
in Science and Technology of Chinese Worldwide. They
published 22 books, 159 papers in international journals
and 1100 papers in Chinese journals and granted 13 invention
patents of China. Since 1995, the Lab graduated 241
Ph.D. and 299 MS students and trained 17 postdoctoral
research fellows. Currently there are 246 Ph.D. and
315 MS students pursuing their degrees and 5 postdoctoral
research fellows working in the Lab.
International Collaboration
and Exchanges
The Lab has been making great efforts on international
collaborations and exchanges, and established long term
relationships with the counter parts of many prominent
overseas research institutions including Harvard University,
Columbia University, etc. Since 1995, the Lab has invited
over 30 distinguished scholars from Harvard University,
Oxford University, University of Toronto, Kei Ying University,
Royal Swedish Institute of Technology, Institute of
Industrial Automation of Italy, etc., to give lecture
and seminars in the Lab, whilst the resident members
of the Lab also went aboard to give seminars at Harvard
University, MIT, Ache University of Technology, University
of California at Davis, etc. The lab also has received
15 visiting scholars from aboard and within the country.
During this period, the Lab has organized 4 international
conferences and 2 Chinese conferences.
