The Laboratory for Mechanical Behavior of
Materials was established on the base of Research Institute
for Strength of Metals founded in 1963 in XiĄŻan Jiaotong
University. The Lab. was supported by the State Education
Commission in 1986, and set up as the state key lab approved
by the State Planning Commission in 1990, having got the
loan of 1.5 million US dollars from the World Bank. In
1994 it was proved to be up to the standard and became
open to the outside world.
This Lab. is engaged in the research of mechanical performance
of materials. Properties and performance of materials
are closely associated with applications and mechanical
behavior is an important issue either for mechanical or
functional materials. Close attention has been paid in
this Lab. to correlate mechanical properties with processing,
composition and microstructure in order to develop reasonable
criteria in accordance with different service conditions.
The research activities are focused on three areas: fundamental
rules of mechanical properties under various service conditions;
strength of surface layer and interfacial strength; and
mechanical behavior of newly developed materials. The
main topics in the current stage are: mechanical criteria
of newly developed electron materials; steel properties
under high intensity erosion; healing and recovery of
fatigued microcrack and damage in metals; evaluation of
interfacial strength; high hardness with low friction
coatings; processing and evaluation of bio-materials;
net shape sintering and properties of ceramics; machine
ability and weld ability of nano-structure ceramics.
There are 26 staff members, including 19 professors (1
member of Chinese Academy of Engineering), 5 associate
professors, 3 lecturers and 3 technicians. The academic
committee involves 15 experts (3 members of Chinese Academy
of Sciences or Chinese Academy of Engineering) and professor
Yaohe Zhou, academician of CAS, acts as the current director
of the scientific committee and professor Jun Sun is the
director of the Lab.
This Lab. has been intensively involved in fundamental
or applied fundamental research within the scope of Natural
Science Foundation of China, of which 1 major project,
6 key projects and 36 general projects have been performed.
In addition, 11 projects of "863" high-tech
program, "95"key task project and other state
level programs were conducted. This Lab. has won 10 awards
of National Science and Technology Achievement Prize,
among them the "Study of Low of Martensite and Its
Application" achieved the first-class award and its
economic benefit reached 1 billion Chinese Yuan. Besides,
an improvement on the expression stress intensity factor;
criterion of metals under repeated impact; properties
and structures of high capacity electric contactor; plastic
deformation of hexagonal metals; effect of residual stress
on fatigue; evaluation of bonding strength of thin coatings;
and mechanical behavior of nano-structure materials are
main contributions in recent years. More than 100 papers
were annually published on international and domestic
journals.
At present there are around 120 M.S. and Ph.D students
enrolled to pursue degrees in the Lab. The young researchers
are acting as backbone of the Lab. 1 research fellow was
awarded the National Outstanding Young Investigator Grant
of China and also appointed as Cheung Kong Chair Professor
of Materials Science funded by both Cheung Kong Foundation
in Hong Kong and Educational Ministry of China. 4 fellows
were awarded the Trans-Century Training Program Foundation
for the Talents by Ministry of Education and also 3 persons
received the Excellent Junior Faculty Grant of Fok Ying
Tung Education Foundation (Hong Kong) and Educational
Ministry. 3 young members were awarded the Alexauder Von
Humboldt Fellowship, NSERC International Research Fellowship
of Canada and JSPS Fellowship of Japan respectively.
The Lab. has set up academic exchanges and research cooperation
with many universities and research centers in USA, UK,
Japan, Germany, Belgium, France, etc. From 1997 to 2000,
the Lab. has chaired and sponsored 2 international conferences
and 2 domestic conferences. There were 120 participants
including 2/3 more from abroad who attended the international
conference of Asia and Pacific Conference on Strength
and Fracture 99 held by the Lab. in Xi'an in 1999. Quite
a number of foreign scholars made presentations in this
Lab. and many researchers in this Lab. have been invited
to be session chairmen or key note speakers of international
conferences.
In addition to conventional tools for micro-structure
analysis, this Lab. is equipped with various mechanical
testing machines with different capacities. A number of
self-made processing and evaluation apparatus have been
installed in recent years to promote the research potential.
